Patterns Breaking through: why aren't you taking action?
Travvant gives the golden tip to get moving though!
Do you recognize the following questions?
⇒ What do I need to (sustainably) get more energy from my work?
⇒ I want something different professionally, but don't know what.
⇒ What are my talents and what job and work environment fit who I am?
Then, of course, the idea is to get started on this.
After "thinking and feeling" (the internal work), there comes, of course, the "doing" (the external work: engaging in conversations with your supervisor and/or HR, tagging along with someone who does what you want to do to see if the image you have of that job matches reality).
Breaking patterns: this is often a difficult step ...
Why? This has everything to do with our brain. This is because our brain does not readily let us do things we are not comfortable with, even if you want to and feel very motivated to do so. So what do you do with your new insights about your career? Because ... you do want to become the person you really want to be. You do want to use your talents and let them flourish in the job you most want to do. You want that dream job, your own business or a better work-life balance.
Don't you? Your brain, however, makes you hesitate. Just before something should happen, your brain sends a signal of doubt just as you step out of your comfort zone. Our brain provides our "safety. We all know it. It's the moment when you are preempted at the bakery by a stranger, who came in later, yet now dead set on ordering his sandwich. During a fraction you think "do I say something about this or not? Either you say something right away, or you shake your head and let the moment pass.
Recognizable?
Getting back to your career ...
Suppose you want to change something in your work situation. So what is the 'trick' to achieving your goal? Don't wait for your "motivation" alone to make the move. This is often insufficient. The steps required to try new things will always evoke fear and uncertainty. ALWAYS. So get used to it.
Because ... one decision to take another step brings you closer again to your goal, to what you want so much. Then, if it's not the right step (that's possible, of course), it can make you lose all your courage and self-confidence. Nothing seems to make sense anymore, and questions come up. You keep running circles in your head ...
How do you get out of this? Well, take action as soon as possible so that you CAN'T think. If you know what you want and know you have to do it, do it!
Open door? Your brain loves assignments and lists. It really does! If your plans, goals and intentions are clear, your brain will help you with this. By doing what?
Use the 5 second rule
See book and TEDxtalk by Mel Robbins "how to stop screwing you.
Using the 5-second rule to break patterns
That is, when you come into a new situation or want to do something, count from 5 to 1 and then just take action. Because after 5 seconds of just waiting, your brain tells you anyway that it is safer to wait to take action and your inner voice will take away your power.
When you count 5-4-3-2-1 (so definitely count backwards!), you interrupt your habit (your autopilot). Your prefrontal cortex is awakened. This is necessary to arrive at new things and become successful.
Use the 5-second rule to break patterns and turn new insights into action. You will encounter resistance, of course, but by doing it often, it will become a habit and you will build your confidence.
