4 tips for applying for a job after burnout

Have you recovered from your burnout in the meantime? And returning to your old workplace is not an option? Then perhaps the next exciting step awaits you: finding a new employer! How do you discuss this topic and how do you make sure you don't relapse?

We give you 4 tips for applying for a job after burnout, so you can get back to work soon and get energy from your work instead of it taking energy....
  1. Consider the cause

You've had a lot of time to think over the past few months. The "why question" probably haunts your mind regularly. Does the cause of your burnout have to do with your employer's values, which do not align with yours? Or does the job not quite suit you? Your career passport can help you with this. It contains an overview of
    → all your important values
→ all the things you are good at and enjoy doing
→ the things you would like to develop.
On this basis you can take stock of your previous job and immediately see where there is a match and where there is a mismatch. Take this with you to your job interview!

  2. Explain the gap on your resume positively

Do you have a hole on your resume because of burnout? Then chances are that this is going to be asked about during the job interview. Lying is not a good option. Therefore, describe your burnout in a positive way. Say, for example, that it was a time to rest and think about a new challenge and show your career passport and say that you now have a view of the ingredients you need to get energy from your work. Don't get asked about it? Then don't say anything about it. Keep in mind that "everything that gets attention grows. You don't want to stick in people's minds as that person with the burnout, but as someone with those and those qualities.

  3. Be mindful of your limits

Were you burning yourself out by working too much? Take a different approach after applying for a job. Agree with yourself how much you will work and stick to it. Also recognize in time symptoms that you had in the past. Do not stress, but tackle them in time and take a step back. This will really make your burnout a thing of the past.

  4. Happier after burnout

In burnout, you get to know yourself. How enriching this is! Think of it as a huge learning moment for which you can be grateful. Don't drag the past with you, but work on your future. Apply for a job that makes you happy, make sure you relax and enjoy life more than ever before!
